The Green Schools Challenge involves students and school staff directly in
designing and implementing energy and environmental solutions at their schools.
Schools can reduce their overall carbon footprint while promoting long-term environmental sustainability of their community. School activities are student-led and use education and school-wide behavior change to meet energy-reduction goals that are part of an overall plan to reduce the school‘s carbon footprint.

The Green Team!
October Challenge
Student Driven - student initiated projects are coached and guided by Ms. Foore and Dr. Lemas of the Nautilus Middle School Science Dept. 7th Grade Junior Scholars and leaders are spearheading Energy Efficient- Environmentally Aware activites for the students, faculty, and school. These are shared with families and used to teach about energy awareness / recycling -and saving money through saving energy.
October Challenge will be met by expanding our Green Team, Monitoring and evaluating walk through checklists in the school to save energy, posting and adopting a School Pledge and Classroom Pledge about commitment to environmental responsibilities by students, staff, administration, families, and community.

Rescuing a newborn...
One of the students at Nautilus Middle School saw a newborn squirrel fall out of a tree. She picked it up with a box and bag (for safety) and brought it to her science teacher, who had worked as a federal and state rehabilitator for years. Ms. Foote has been nursing the newborn and teaching the students about the physiology of animals- raising orphan mammals... The students are great for learning and supportive. More photos to come...
Our Green School Challenge Pledge:
Our school is concerned about conserving energy, water, and preventing waste through recycling. Showing global climate change, we believe that education and action can make a difference. Participating in Green School Challenge, we pledge to conserve energy, water, reduce waste and recycle.
Monthly Challenges
The Green School Challenge is a school wide program in competition of Miami Dade County Schools. Science Academic Club committee
leaders Delila and Marley Penson will be working with teachers, students, and staff in a student driven / initiated program. This committee will organize Monthly Challenges, regular energy walk through monitoring, and promoting awareness in saving energy and recycling through the Green Team projects. The Green Team Student Committee will be working and mentored by Ms. Gwen Foote and Dr. Rosa Lemas in the Science Dept. http://www.dreamingreen.org/

September Challenge
For our September challenge we did an energy walk-through of the school. We checked if lighting, computers, and other appliances we off/on regarding whether people were in the rooms or not.
October Challenge
For October we drew a School Energy, Water and Waste Map. It showed where our water goeas and the waste plan.

Description of Activity:Students and teachers expanded Green School Team with a student leader group
Green Team Student leaders created a Green School Pledge for our lobby.
Student leaders delivered classroom pledges to all classrooms and offices.
Students established a School Energy, Water & Waste Map to begin a Campaign to Save Energy.
This is an action plan for organizing energy and water saving awareness and pickup for waste for reducing and recycling.
Students divided into groups. Students shared input and drew the map. They did a walk through for documenting energy users, scanned the area, and reported things \that are using energy. Leaders assigned a portion of the school to each group. A group drew a map of the school by floor. They toured the school for mapping and recorded energy users to show on the map, such as light
fixtures, bulbs in each, and computer areas, then reported on what they found.
Students brainstormed how the school might save energy. They suggested that doors be shut to keep heat in or out; turn off the lights when not in room and after school. The class selected ways to save energy and made a plan to involve the school wide program for an energy efficiency action plan.
Indicate how the Challenge was presented: Green Team, Class and School wide - School Pledge
Mapping by floor for organizing collecting recyclable waste and monitor periodic energy checks with walk throughs.

November Challenge
Students made slogans ans signs about recycling. After that, we hung them up around school to teach the students about where you recycle, what you recycle, and how you can recycle.
December Challenge
For our December challenge we made a 30 long PSA (public service announcement). The PSA focused strictly on conserving water and ways we can help wipe out the problem of wasting water. This PSa also tied in with the Future City Challenge 2013.
January Challenge
Student in our science classes are making 30-60 second PSA's (public service anouncements) on "green" influenced jobs. For example an editor for a newspaper or any media related source talking about how to have a healthier environment, or an engineer!
