Overview This activity is intended for Green Team members to use their creativity and apply their leadership skills to design and lead a water conservation project of their choosing.
Activity Description By undertaking this activity, Green Teams will have the opportunity to design their own water conservation initiative. The activity: 1) identifies a problem area, 2) helps solve a problem, and 3) leads to behavioral changes or greater understanding of water conservation. Points are earned and prizes to be won. Information is resourceful, creative and has an effective message, plus our own activity earns you 1 bonus point in the challenge!

2. Activity 1: Community Involvement and Action – What’s in Your Water?
Overview Over 8 million people –plus the environment, agriculture, businesses and visitors– rely on South Florida’s limited water resources. Government efforts alone cannot provide the range and variety of information to assess water quality in each watershed. It is our responsibility to respectfully manage our water resources.
Activity Description Students will learn about nutrient runoff and eutrophication, then test a community body of water and determine its composition.

Dream in Green Program was promoted through WE-LAB & Green School Challenge Projects.
https://www.facebook.com/educationfundmiami
4. Activity 5: WE-LAB – Building a Model Aquifer
Overview Only one tablespoon in every gallon of water on Earth is fresh water (called potable water). The remaining water is salty, or frozen as ice. Use of ground water supplies is increasing at twice the rate of surface supplies, and the trend is expected to continue. Until the late 1970’s, it was widely believed that ground water was protected from contamination by the natural filtering effect of the many layers of soil, sand, gravel and rocks. We now know that pollutants can travel through all these layers. Incidents of serious contamination have been reported in every state in the nation. In Miami-Dade County, the majority of fresh water is supplied by the Biscayne aquifer.
5. Environmental projects were submitted in e-Cybermission on-line science competition, sponsored by National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP). e-CYBERMISSION is a web-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics competition for 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grade teams. Teams propose a solution to a real problem in their community and compete for State, Regional and National Awards. e-Cybermission, www.ecybermission.com Competitions will be submitted online in January.

Challenge 7 – Green Cuisine: Food for Space Exploration
Scientists at NASA are experimenting with food plants in space. The goal is to produce food in small growth chambers that can be carried aboard a spacecraft. Recipes are needed for a tasty nutritious food item, using plants that are being developed for growing in space, requiring no more than 250square centimeters of growing space.
Saturday, April 9, two students participated in Challenge 7- Green Cuisine: Meals for Space Exploration at The Fairchild Botanical Garden. Jamie Lin and Audrey Torres earned 153 points out of 200, with their recipe of Creamy Spinach Sweet Potato with Cashew Sauce.

Mr. Richard Kern presented a special event December, in NMS auditorium, Ghosts of the Western Glades.
http://www.odysseyearth.com/teacher-resources/Made possible by supporters Redland Company, The Batchelor Foundation, The Herbert W. Hoover Foundation, and
The Rosenberg Foundation
Follow up on Ghost of the Western Glades included a taped interview with Mr. Richard Kern, and classroom activities with online program through Odyssey Earth, with Water and major ghost of the Western Glade. Richard Kern performing for students, Science Dept. Green Team with Mr. Richard Kern, TV Productions Class working & learning video.
Nautilus Middle School Science Fair in Environmental Topics
Nautilus Middle School Science Fair consists of environmental and engineering projects to promote energy and water conservation through scientific inquiry and engineering projects.

3. IMPACT Idea EXPO- Dr. Gwendolyn Foote presented a Disseminator Project at a teachers’ workshop that based the practice of CER (Claim- Evidence- Reasoning) on the Dream in Green Program.
II. HOUR of CODE- Dr. Gwendolyn Foote hosted Hour of Code
Her with science classes Dec 7 -11, although students were invited to participate through Dec 13 with programs that were free for the week. Students will receive Certificates for participation. The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries.
